Job Summary

Members of the Six Mile Post newspaper and Student Spin podcast staffs must be team players who are flexible and willing to be cross-trained on best practices in bringing news to the greater GHC community through print and podcast media. Staff will research to prepare for interviews, write podcast outlines or stories for print, shoot photos and/or videos, record and edit audio, write captions and create digital graphics or layouts for print. Student staff members will be assigned to a particular news outlet- either the podcast or newspaper, based on their background, interests and strengths.

Responsibilities

• Completing a set of D2L training modules and/or in-person training before taking on assignments.

• Attending weekly staff meetings that will be offered face-to-face and through Zoom. Meeting days and times are set to accommodate the greatest number of staff members and, therefore, change each semester.

• Bringing ideas for story and interview topics to the weekly meetings to "pitch"; to the team for consideration.

• Researching assignment subjects prior to scheduling interviews (via phone, Zoom or face-to-face) with relevant people to complete print news stories or podcast episodes, in a timely manner, to meet deadlines.

• Using an online story assignment software called "SnoFlow"; to submit written work and photography.

• Participating in post-production editing of recordings or copy-editing of print pieces for rewrites/corrections.

• Using software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Canva to create podcast cover art, promotional pieces and the layout of newspaper pages for any printed issues. Adobe Audition is used for podcast recording and editing.

• Participating in scheduled all-staff training sessions and print newspaper design nights 2-4 times per semester.

• Assisting with the on-boarding and training of new staff and pitching in if/when a team member is out sick.

• Related duties as assigned


Required Qualifications

• An B average or higher in a recent high school or college English course

• Willingness to learn new skills in interviewing, writing, photography, audio recording/editing, page layout and design

• Ability to take constructive criticism well

• Comfortable with Microsoft Office

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Strong background research and writing skills are a must- this includes grammar, punctuation, spelling, awareness of subject/verb agreement, attention to voice, and the ability to write for a broad group of people in a clear way.

• The ability and willingness to interact with unfamiliar people- in person, on the phone and through email, in a professional but warm and friendly manner. Although much of the work can be done remotely, there are times when attending events and conducting an in-person interviewing will be necessary to fulfill and assignment.

• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point is preferred.

• Punctuality, organization and maturity are necessary and expected traits for this position.

• Familiarity with video production, photo editing and page design software is desirable but not required (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Audition etc.).

• Being able to analyze problems as they occur and to come up with realistic solutions
