Eagle Helps Bats Fly
Northwest Georgia Boy Scouts would like to congratulate Kyle Hoganson, the latest Eagle Scout from Bartow County. Nationally, the rank of Eagle Scout is earned by only 6.7% of Boy Scouts. In order to earn Eagle, a Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, including Eagle required badges that focus on Citizenship, First Aid, Personal Fitness, and Environmental Science. In addition to the merit badges, each Eagle Scout must take on at least four different leadership roles in his Troop where he leads his peers. The next daunting task is the Eagle Project. The Eagle candidate must conceive of a leadership project that benefits the community outside of Scouting and then plan, write up, and complete his project. He presents his proposal not only to the beneficiary, but to a Board of community members who determine whether he is able to proceed.
Kyle was “pricked” with the idea for his Eagle project at Dellinger Park. As he relaxed in his hammock (the new, cool way to sleep on a backpacking trip), Kyle was being ravaged by mosquitoes. Through his training in the Environmental Science merit badge, Kyle knew that bats were an effective, safe, and eco-friendly way to greatly reduce the mosquito population. There were some bat houses at the park, but they were in disrepair and there were too few. After communicating with the Parks and Recreation department and completing his required paperwork, Kyle proceeded to lead a team to build new weather-proof bat houses and assist with the Rec department as they were hung. The project was the result of 132 volunteer hours.
Donna Williams asked Kyle a few questions about his experience with Scouts:
What did you learn from the project? Time management. People will challenge your ideas. You have to listen and yet be willing to be in charge and make decisions. I also learned how to lead multiple people at a time.
What would you say to a mom thinking about putting her son in Scouts? Sticking through Scouting will give you some of the most crucial skills you need for success in life. It will help you aspire to go to college and be a leader. You learn to work with a team at many levels.
What other extracurricular activities did you do in high school? I was the school photographer, a member of Future Business Leaders of America, band, and BETA club. I also worked 30 hours a week at times.
What are your future plans? I will attend KSU in the fall and Major in Environmental Science.
