Bartow Leaders Culminate with Celebration

For the first time in the storied history of the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce, the graduates from the Leadership Program will hold a joint Graduation Celebration.  The Chamber’s Leadership Bartow program encompasses three groups; Youth Leadership, Adult Leadership and the Leadership Bartow Alumni Association.   The mission of Leadership Bartow is to build a broad-based network of community leaders who enhance their leadership abilities and skills through continuing education, shared perspectives and community involvement to enrich the quality of life and to shape the future of Bartow County.

Youth Leadership participants are sophomores and juniors at Bartow County High Schools as well as Cartersville High School that gather one Saturday per month during the school year.  They meet with the sole purpose of enhancing their leadership potential through a broad base curriculum and leadership skill building activities.  Adult Leadership participants are local businessmen and women from various trade industries throughout Bartow County that represent the best and brightest that Bartow has to offer for future leadership opportunities.  This group meets one Wednesday every month.  The Leadership Bartow Alumni Association is comprised of former Adult Leadership Bartow graduates.  This group helps with the facilitation of both Youth Leadership and Adult Leadership session days.  It is also the resource to carry out the objectives of the Leadership Bartow program as a whole through continuing education and community involvement.

During the course of the year, which runs from August to May, participants receive a sampling of all aspects of Bartow County and the impact our community has on the State level.  Leadership Bartow begins with a retreat in the optimal setting to commence the process of developing a diverse pool of leaders for Bartow County.  Once the focus is set at the retreat, participants immediately begin the leadership development piece through specific curriculum developed by Dr. Tina Brush, Leadership Facilitator at Georgia Highlands College.  The curriculum ranges in topic from self-leadership and building trust to leading change and collaborative leadership.  In all, there are eight topics taught during the year with one topic expounded upon each class session.  Following the topic workshops, participants hear from various leaders within our community.  This experience gives each participant the ability to gain knowledge of how they can become more involved in their community as well as how they can improve personally to achieve individual and professional goals.

This year, Leadership Bartow has successfully gone through a transformation.  This transformation was made possible by many local leaders that have graduated from the program and had a desire to see it improve.  Extensive efforts were put forth by these leaders to plan and construct a program that would stand the test of time and equip prospective leaders with the tools necessary to truly enhance our future. The phrase “Enhancing Our Future” has become the theme and life line of the Leadership Bartow program.  As we strive to educate emerging leaders of our community, we focus our efforts on the overall objective of Enhancing Our Future.

A joint graduation celebration will be held the evening of Thursday, May 9, 2013.  Graduation affords class participants, steering committee members, family members and co-workers the opportunity to reflect over the past year.  The event is a true culmination of relationships made.  This year, our featured speaker is Arnold Heflin.  Mr. Heflin is a retired commercial real estate agent and is the author of the book “Mockingbird’s Song: Hettie Keller’s 10 Maxims for Peace and Happiness.”
