A Spring Break Stay-cation!
By Tom Shinall, Director of Marketing at Booth Western Art Museum
The month of April brings warmer weather and the much anticipated annual event of Spring Break. For many families, spring break is a chance to get away and unwind. With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and New Year, many plan to utilize their break for family time and unique opportunities.
Keep in mind that the summer vacation season is right around the corner. So this year, I propose a Spring Break Stay-cation! Skip the long lines at regional amusement parks and the over-priced hotel rooms and take advantage of the attractions and resources here in Cartersville and Bartow County.
Take Booth Western Art Museum for example; as director of marketing, I hear far too often, “I’ve lived here [Bartow Co.] for years and have never been there.” It is understandable that we all live busy lives and this is why staying home for spring break can allow you to visit some of the places you have been meaning to visit.
At Booth, the week of spring break offers several special opportunities. First, a spring break camp on Native American Ceramics for children ages 7-12. Participants will learn how Maria Martinez and other Native American master potters perfected the art of both black-on-black and poly-chrome pottery. The camp will be taught by Cathy Amos and will run Monday-Friday, April 7-11, from 9:00 am – noon. The cost of the camp is $125.00 for Museum Members and $150.00 for not-yet-members; the cost includes supplies. The second opportunity is that it will be the FINAL WEEK of the Today’s West! exhibit. In October, the Museum opened Today’s West! Contemporary Art from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West highlighting the contemporary side of the world famous collection from Cody, Wyoming. The exhibit runs through April 13; ironically, the final day of our local spring break. If you have not seen this exhibit, be sure to before it leaves; it may never return to this part of the country! Also on exhibit, Taking the Reins! The Art of Donna Howell-Sickles will be on its FINAL MONTH of showcasing the joyful, whimsical imagery of cowgirl heroines and their animal counterparts. As an added bonus, opening on April 8 in Borderlands Gallery, the Bartow County and Cartersville City Schools Elementary Art Exhibit will highlight the emerging and talented young artists from elementary schools in the Bartow County and Cartersville City School Systems. At Booth Western Art Museum, you can See America’s Story by exploring the West without leaving the South!
Keep in mind, Georgia weather has a mind of its own, so let’s look at your options for both indoor and outdoor adventures inside the county lines. If the forecast calls for April showers, take advantage of visiting Bartow History Museum, Tellus Science Museum, Rose Lawn Museum, Kingston Women's History Museum, Noble Hill-Wheeler Memorial Center, Allatoona Lake Visitor's Center, Euharlee Covered Bridge and History Museum, numerous local retail shops and eateries, and of course, the aforementioned Booth Western Art Museum.
With hope of perfect weather for your Spring Break Stay-cation, take advantage of these outdoor adventures: Barnsley Gardens Resort, Red Top Mountain State Park, the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site, Terminus Wake Park, Euharlee Creek Outfitters, the world's first Coca-Cola outdoor wall advertisement, Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area, Pettit Creek Farms, Allatoona Pass, Pine Mountain Trail, and Historic Downtown Cartersville.
Again, Spring Break is meant to be a time for families to enjoy their time together, slow down, and unwind before the business of the spring and summer seasons. Instead of heading off for yet another trip, stay home and enjoy the attractions and adventures that await you here in Bartow County. Wishing you the best during your Spring Break Stay-cation!
