Job Description
JOB TITLE: Apprentice Lineman III

DEPARTMENT: Electric, City of Cartersville

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, alteration and repair of overhead electrical lines, underground cables, electrical substations, and related electrical equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Assists with installation, repair, and maintenance of two- and three-phase conductors; installs, maintains, and repairs single-phase conductors.
  • Constructs and maintains overhead electrical lines; repairs sagging wires and trims or removes tree limbs from electrical system rights-of-way.
  • Installs and maintains underground electrical cables and transformers.
  • Install transformers and switches to provide commercial and residential electrical services, including temporary services.
  • Responds to trouble calls related to power outages, accidents, fires, and weather conditions.
  • Remains on call to reconnect electrical services.
  • Inspects incoming transformers to detect if polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are present.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
 
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
  • Knowledge of electrical construction, maintenance, and repair practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the safety procedures of the electrical trade.
  • Skill in the use of such tools and equipment as chippers, chainsaws, backhoes, diggers, and trenchers.
  • Skill in working with high voltage electrical lines.
  • Skill in operating bucket and derrick trucks.
  • Skill in climbing utility poles.
  • Skill in basic mathematics.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for three to four years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Electric Distribution Supervisor or Lead Lineman assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include National Electrical Code standards, line construction specifications, local building codes, electric utility safety manuals, and work orders. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, substations, wires and cables. The work is made difficult by extreme weather conditions and working with energized conductors.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to install, maintain and repair electrical lines and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the safe, efficient, and effective provision of electrical services.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, workers in related support units, and electrical service customers.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide or restore services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, crouching, stooping, and bending. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb poles, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed both in a stockroom and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, high voltage, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves, line hoses, hot sticks, hard hats and eye protectors.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has functional supervision over Groundworker.
