Job Description
JOB TITLE: Electric Utility Engineering Intern
 
PAY RATE: $15.00 per hour
 
DEPARTMENT: Electric, City of Cartersville
 
JOB SUMMARY: As part of our Electric Utility Engineering Team, you will benefit from a stimulating and challenging work environment. During your internship, you will gain experience and exposure to practical engineering applications within the utility industry. 
 
MAJOR DUTIES AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
 
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and/or suggests improved methods.
  • Gathers, correlates, and analyzes specific data using established procedures.
  • Performs detailed and/or routine engineering assignments involving established calculations, tests and analysis.
  • Performs a variety of routine tasks that will improve the individual’s familiarization with the engineering methods, practices, and programs of the Department
  • Supports operating and maintenance functions with engineering analysis, troubleshooting, problem identification, problem resolution activities.
  • Assists Engineers with large projects, as needed.
  • Assists with the development of station/engineering goals, objectives, budgets, programs and procedures.
  • Plans and controls all activities so as to provide an accident-free work place.
  • Performs other duties as directed by management
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC)
  • Knowledge of city policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of residential electrical codes and standards
  • Knowledge of electrical safety practices and procedures
  • Skill in basic mathematics
  • Skill in the use of meter-testing equipment
  • Skill in the use of computers
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle
  • Skill in oral and written communication
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Available on a part-time basis during normal business hours (Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm), up to 29.5 hours per week.
  • Pursuing a post-secondary degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Systems Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Engineering Technology, or Mechatronics Engineering Technology is required.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • The employee must perform work in both a stockroom and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, high voltage and occasional inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves, line hoses, hot sticks, hard hats and eye protection.  The work can be made difficult by extreme weather conditions and working with energized conductors.
 
 
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Engineering Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for accuracy and compliance with procedures.
 
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the National Electrical Code, applicable building codes, and city departmental policies and procedures.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
 
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of entry-level duties pertaining to Electric Utility Engineering.
 
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is for the incumbent to gain knowledge of Electric Utility Engineering functions.
 
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, the general public, and other city employees.
 
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information and provide services.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The Physical Demands of the job require the employee to perform while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, crouching, stooping and bending.  The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:   The work is performed in an office, a warehouse and outdoors.  The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.  The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves.
 
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
