JOB TITLE: Apprentice Lineman 1

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, alteration and repair of overhead electrical lines, underground cables, electrical substations, and related electrical equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Electrical Distribution Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions requiring the use of judgment. The work is spot-checked while in progress and upon completion for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the National Electrical Code, line construction specifications, local building codes, electric utility safety manuals, and work orders. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, substations, wires and cables. The work is made difficult by extreme weather conditions and working with energized conductors.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to install, maintain and repair electrical lines and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the safe, efficient, and effective provision of electrical services.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, workers in related support units, electrical service customers, and the general public
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, crouching, stooping, and bending. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb poles, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed both in a stockroom and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, high voltage, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves, line hoses, hot sticks, hard hats, and eye protectors.

- Requires graduation of High School or equivalent.
- Requires completion of an Electrical Lineworker Program through a Technical College or Accredited Lineman Program.
- Requires passing a physical exam which includes an alcohol and drug test.
- Requires a valid Class A Commercial Georgia driver’s license.
- Ability to become proficient in climbing poles. Ability to work from a bucket truck.
- Requires a basic knowledge of first-aid, safety rules, line materials and tools and their uses.
- Requires ability to rapidly gain an effective knowledge of basic electricity, construction work and ability to read and interpret maps and staking sheets.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations.
- At a certain point in your development, you will be assigned after hours call to respond to trouble calls related to power outages, accidents, fires, and weather conditions. You will maintain availability for necessary overtime and promptly respond to calls requiring overtime.
- You must reside within 45 minutes of the headquarters and be able to be at the headquarters within 45 minutes of being called to report to work.
- Possess skill in oral and written communication. Must be able to effectively interact with customers, citizens and co-workers.
- Complete all necessary forms, reports, records and information in an accurate and timely manner.
- Possess certain computer skills necessary to fulfill the requirements of this job. Must be familiar with and capable of effectively using Word and Excel software.
- Responsible for the daily inspection, service and maintenance of assigned vehicles and other equipment.
- Advises immediate supervisor/Foreman of maintenance needs on tools, vehicles and other equipment.
- Show concern for customer property and ensure all work areas are left in a clean and safe manner.
- Participate in job training and safety meetings.
- Observes all safety rules, practices and standards and performs all duties and tasks in a safe manner.
- Gain necessary skills needed to operate such tools and equipment as chippers, chainsaws, backhoes, diggers, trenchers, line trucks and bucket trucks.

- After a person has successfully completed a six-month probationary period that person will be scheduled to attend an Apprenticeship program through the Electric Cities of Georgia. This program is paid for by the City of Cartersville. Once you have successfully completed each level of the apprenticeship program you will be considered for promotion to the next level.
