The Civil War Comes Alive!
FOR THE FINAL TIME, THE CIVIL WAR COMES ALIVE!
AT BARTOW HISTORY MUSEUM AND BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM
The Cartersville Museums partner to honor the Civil War Sesquicentennial
CARTERSVILLE, GEORGIA – For the final time, Bartow History Museum and Booth Western Art Museum are excited to present Civil War Comes Alive! on Saturday, May 2 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. In conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War moving through Georgia, members and guests will have the opportunity to experience different aspects of the Civil War as it is brought to life at both museums.
Visitors will experience life on the home front, listen to authentic music, chat with soldiers from the Union and Confederate armies, view Civil War art and artifacts, watch cannon demonstrations, and so much more! Civil War Comes Alive! will feature medical practices, blacksmithing, and signaling, plus infantry, sutler, and cavalry camps. An artillery camp will also be set up on the Booth Museum grounds and will demonstrate cannon firings at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, 1:30 pm, and 2:30 pm.
“We are excited to announce this family-friendly event, not only because it coincides with the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, but also because Bartow County has so many ties to the war,” said Bartow History Museum Executive Director Trey Gaines. “We had the Battle at Allatoona here in Bartow County, and also produced several Officers from this area. Civil War Comes Alive! will be an opportunity for visitors – of all ages – to experience the various aspects of the war and hopefully gain a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the men who served.”
This year’s entertainment schedule includes soldier infantry drill demonstrations at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm; Abraham Lincoln reciting the Gettysburg Address at 11:00 am and his Second Inaugural Address at 1:30 pm; a concert by the 8th Regiment Band at 11:30 am; a presentation on “The End of the Civil War in Georgia” by Robert Jones at 12:30 pm; and the final surrender ceremony at 2:00 pm. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to tour the Booth Museum’s Civil War art gallery, War is Hell, and visit Bartow History Museum to see their exhibitions highlighting life in Bartow County from before the Civil War through present day.
On Friday, May 1, the Museums will present a special one-day event for students in grades 3-12. From 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, students will embark on a journey that will bring history to life through special performances, live demonstrations, and exhibitions inside each museum. Cost is $5.00 for students, $3.00 for adults, and free for classroom teachers. Reservations are required. Call 770-387-3849 to register.
On Saturday, May 2, admission to Civil War Comes Alive! is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for students, and free for children 12 and under, Booth Museum members, Bartow History Museum members, and active military with ID. Prices include access to the Booth Museum festival grounds, as well as admission to Booth Museum and Bartow History Museum. For more information about Civil War Comes Alive!, including more details about the school program on Friday, May 1, please visit www.boothmuseum.org or www.bartowhistorymuseum.org, or call 770-387-1300.

Bartow History Museum: History of Southeast Bartow County
History of Southeast Bartow County
On Thursday, May 28, at 7:00 p.m., Bartow History Museum welcomes guest speakers Gary Ross and Travis Prestwood. Ross and Prestwood will speak about the history of the Allatoona community and the southeast corner of Bartow County.
For years, Ross and Prestwood have lived in the Allatoona area, studying its rich history and geology. What they have found in the southeast corner of Bartow County is a treasure trove of historical accounts, from Native Americans, original roads, gold and iron mining, the W&A railroad, the Civil War, and much more. The two will present these stories through old maps and photographs.
The Evening Lecture will take place at the Bartow History Museum located at 4 E. Church Street in downtown Cartersville. Parking is available next to the building. The lecture is free to members and included with the price of admission for not-yet members. For more information on this and other BHM programs, call 770-382-3818, ext. 6286 or visit our website at www.bartowhistorymuseum.org.
