Apr 3 Free Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Screenings
Ten Minutes That Could Save Your Life
The Hope Center to Offer Free Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Screenings April 3rd

Cartersville, GA; March 10, 2015:     Local physicians will provide free oral, head and neck cancer screenings on Friday, April 3 from 1 until 3 p.m. at The Hope Center at Cartersville Medical Center.  Oral, head and neck cancers claim approximately 14,000 lives per year. If diagnosed early, these cancers can be more easily treated without significant complications, and the chances of survival greatly increase.

Just because you can’t feel it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.  Just ask the more than 100,000 Americans who were diagnosed with cancers of the head and neck (including thyroid) last year.  Unfortunately, many Americans do not recognize the symptoms of these life-threatening diseases, which include cancers of the oral cavity, thyroid, larynx and pharynx, and by the time they are diagnosed, for some, it’s too late.

Dr. William Thoms, Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Madhurima Uppalapati and Dr. Satyen Mehta, Medical Oncologists/Hematologists and Dr. Sanjay Athavale, Otolaryngologist will conduct the simple 10 minute test to determine the risk or presence of oral, head and neck cancers.  Please call MedLine at 800.242.5662 to register for your free oral cancer screening today.

Who should get tested?
Every adult. Tobacco and alcohol users traditionally have been considered the populations at greatest risk for these cancers.  However, oral cancer cases are on the rise in younger adults who do not smoke, and recent research indicates this development is due partly to the increase of the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus, a cancer-causing infection that can be transmitted by oral sex.  HPV-related oral cancers are more difficult to detect because these cancers usually occur on the back of the tongue or on the tonsils, providing even more reason to get screened regularly.

What are the potential warning signs of oral cancers?
The signs and symptoms of oral cancer often go unnoticed.  However, there are a few visible signs associated with these cancers that require immediate attention, including:
  • A sore in your mouth that doesn't heal or that increases in size
  • Persistent pain in your mouth
  • Lumps or white or red patches inside your mouth
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing or moving your tongue
  • Soreness in your throat or feeling that something is caught in your throat
  • Changes in your voice
  • A lump in your neck

If you have any of the above warning signs, do not wait for the free screenings. Seek medical attention immediately.

How can someone get screened locally?
The Hope Center at Cartersville Medical Center will offer free oral cancer screenings on Friday, April 3 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.  The screening is painless and only takes about 10 minutes.  To register, call MedLine at 800.242.5662.

If you’ll be out-of-town on those dates, free screenings will be offered at more than 400 participating institutions worldwide as part of OHANCAW, which is scheduled for the week of April 12-18.  Visit www.OHANCAW.com for the full list of participating sites and for more information. OHANCAW is sponsored nationally by the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance.

Why should someone get screened?
If the above stats weren’t reason enough, know that the screening is quick, painless and free, and it’s right around the corner. Given the current state of the economy and rising health care costs, take advantage of the opportunity to benefit from this preventive health measure at no charge by taking 10 minutes to do something that could save your life. Early diagnosis and treatment improves outcomes and chances of survival, particularly for individuals with HPV-related oral cancers.

Apr 23 2nd Annual "Fore the Kids" Golf Tournament
We are excited to invite you to participate in our second Annual Golf Tournament at Barnsley Resort on April 23, 2015! Bobby Cox is our Tournament Sponsor and will be available to autograph baseballs and participate on an auction team in the tournament! We are seeking sponsors and players to participate in our "Fore the Kids Golf Tournament" April 23rd at Barnsley Resort in Adairsville GA. The goal of the tournament is to raise money to create a more accessible playground for children with disabilities. Last year, the money we raised at our tournament enabled us to get most of the playground rebuilt after we were hit by a tornado. This year we aim to add sidewalks for wheelchairs and walkers, electricity, water, and a restroom. Our goal is that children and their families can utilize our playground during day, evening and weekend hours. Our focus is to bring children out into nature, encourage creative play and bring families closer together while building a supportive community! We hope you can be a special part of our endeavor! Apr 27 Free Tobacco Cessation Class
KICK THE HABIT WITH FREE TOBACCO CESSATION CLASSES AT CARTERSVILLE MEDICAL CENTER

Cartersville, GA; April 13, 2015:  Cartersville Medical Center is now offering a monthly tobacco cessation class.  The class, led by Sandra Bethune, Georgia Department of Public Health, is free of charge and open to anyone interested in quitting tobacco, including cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.  The next class is scheduled for Monday, April 27.

“According to the CDC, people who stop smoking greatly reduce their risk for disease and early death. Although the health benefits are greater for people who stop at earlier ages, there are benefits at any age.  You are never too old to quit,” says Kim Hogan, RN, evidence based coordinator at Cartersville Medical Center.

Hogan references the CDC website (www.cdc.gov) which includes information about the health benefits of quitting tobacco.

According to the website, stopping smoking is associated with the following health benefits:
  • Lowered risk for lung cancer and many other types of cancer.
  • Reduced risk for heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease (narrowing of the blood vessels outside your heart).
  • Reduced heart disease risk within 1 to 2 years of quitting.
  • Reduced respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. While these symptoms may not disappear, they do not continue to progress at the same rate among people who quit compared with those who continue to smoke.
  • Reduced risk of developing some lung diseases (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also known as COPD, one of the leading causes of death in the United States).
  • Reduced risk for infertility in women of childbearing age. Women who stop smoking during pregnancy also reduce their risk of having a low birth weight baby.

The next class will be offered Monday, April 27, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. in Classroom 1 at Cartersville Medical Center.  To register, for more information or future class dates, visit CartersvilleMedical.com and click on “Events & Classes” or call MedLine at 800.242.5662.

Apr 30 New Feature Exhibit Opening at Bartow History Museum
New Feature Exhibition Opening at Bartow History Museum

The Bartow History Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a new feature exhibition on Thursday, April 30, 2015.  The new exhibit, “Fill ‘er Up: The Story of the Service Station,” takes a look at the way gas and service stations have changes over time.

Throughout the early 20th century, gas stations popped up along early roadways and provided fuel for motorists across the country.  Today’s gas stations complete with mini-marts, fast food restaurants, car washes and islands of self-serve fuel have come a long way since the days of pumping gas from a storage tank into a glass or metal dispenser.

This exhibit will include a variety of historic gas pumps and other tools, parts, and fixtures used both inside and outside the station, as well as photographs of Bartow County service stations.  While historic service stations are disappearing, they will continue to serve as reminders of earlier times when every tank of gas came with an oil check and a cleaned windshield.

The opening will take place on Thursday, April 30, 2015.  A member’s preview and reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., with refreshments provided by Highway 41 Filling Station.  At 7 p.m., author and historian, Abbie Parks, will present a special lecture on her book Images of America: North Georgia’s Dixie Highway.  Through historic photographs, the book chronicles the rise of the Dixie Highway tourist route and the service related businesses that sprang up along that route, including service stations.

The Bartow History Museum is located at 4 E. Church Street in downtown Cartersville.  Parking is available next to the building.  The lecture is free to members and included with the price of admission for not-yet members.  For more information on this and other BHM programs, call 770-382-3818, ext. 6288 or visit our website at www.bartowhistorymuseum.org.
