Non-Profit Executive Roundtable
This is a group of executive level professionals in Non-profit organizations that serve Bartow County. We meet once a month to discuss a different topic, hear from a speaker on a subject and/or network. It is a lunch and learn format, so please feel free to bring your lunch and meet with us. We do ask that you let us know if you plan to attend.
 

The September Adairsville Eggs & Issues Breakfast will be Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the NorthPointe Church Meeting Facility (30 Orchard Road, Adairsville).  The breakfast is sponsored by Greg Smith with Alfa Insurance and Bartow County Fire Chief, Craig Millsap, will be the featured speaker.

Planning is underway for an annual 9 mile walk benefiting 9 non-profit local organizations! The walk will be a loop traveling through downtown Cartersville, with the beginning and ending at the West Loop of Pine Mountain.

Check in begins at 8am on Thursday, September 11th. This is sure to deliver a celebration for the freedom of America. We will honor those that actively serve, are on reserve, first responders, and those that have died. Bring your flag, uniforms and gratitude.

We hope you will join us as a volunteer, uniformed honorary, walker or sponsor for the 2014 March To The Mountain walk. There is no fee to participate in the walk, but online registration is required!  The first 150 registrants to sign up by August 31 will be awarded a free T-shirt.

What is the Belk Charity Day?
It is a private, four-hour sale dedicated to supporting local non-profit organizations.  Participating charities will have the opportunity to raise money for their organization while private sale customers receive 20%-70% off Belk purchases storewide, including special savings on rarely-discounted brands.

When is the Belk Charity Day?
The Charity Sale will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 6 - 10 AM at the Belk Cartersville store. Your non-profit can still participate in the event, even if you can't be part of the Saturday morning event.

The Small Business Council of the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Lunch and Learn, facilitated by Matt Pearce with the Small Business Development Center.

This Introduction to Social Media Program is an overview program targeting managers and decision makers. The program addresses what social media is and how businesses can use it. Unlike other social media courses, we do not try to convince you that you must be using social media. Rather, this social media program gives you the tools and knowledge you need to make that decision for yourself. The class introduces social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Pinterest.

This 30-Hour General Industry Training Program covers a variety of topics. The class covers OSHA policies, procedures, and standards, as well as general industry safety and health principles. Attendees will be able to identify the most common hazards in their workplaces, locate the applicable OSHA general industry standard, and determine appropriate abatement methods to address non-compliance with these standards.

Ten Minutes That Could Save Your Life
The Hope Center to Offer Free Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Screenings September 19
 
Cartersville, GA; August 12, 2014:     Local physicians will provide free oral, head and neck cancer screenings on Friday, September 19 from 1 until 5 p.m. at The Hope Center at Cartersville Medical Center.  Oral, head and neck cancers claim approximately 13,000 lives per year. If diagnosed early, these cancers can be more easily treated without significant complications, and the chances of survival greatly increase. 
 
Just because you can’t feel it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.  Just ask the more than 100,000 Americans who were diagnosed with cancers of the head and neck (including thyroid) last year.  Unfortunately, many Americans do not recognize the symptoms of these life-threatening diseases, which include cancers of the oral cavity, thyroid, larynx and pharynx, and by the time they are diagnosed, for some, it’s too late.
 
Dr. William Thoms, Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Madhurima Uppalapati and Dr. Satyen Mehta, Medical Oncologists/Hematologists and Dr. Sanjay Athavale, Otolaryngologist will conduct the simple 10 minute test to determine the risk or presence of oral, head and neck cancers.
 
Who should get tested?
Every adult. Tobacco and alcohol users traditionally have been considered the populations at greatest risk for these cancers.  However, oral cancer cases are on the rise in younger adults who do not smoke, and recent research indicates this development is due partly to the increase of the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus, a cancer-causing infection that can be transmitted by oral sex.  HPV-related oral cancers are more difficult to detect because these cancers usually occur on the back of the tongue or on the tonsils, providing even more reason to get screened regularly.
 
What are the potential warning signs of oral cancers?
The signs and symptoms of oral cancer often go unnoticed.  However, there are a few visible signs associated with these cancers that require immediate attention, including:

• A sore in your mouth that doesn't heal or that increases in size
• Persistent pain in your mouth
• Lumps or white or red patches inside your mouth
• Difficulty chewing or swallowing or moving your tongue
• Soreness in your throat or feeling that something is caught in your throat
• Changes in your voice
• A lump in your neck

 
If you have any of the above warning signs, do not wait for the free screenings. Seek medical attention immediately.
 
How can I get screened locally?

The Bartow History Museum and Stage Works, Inc. invite you to join us for our eleventh annual tour of historic Oak Hill Cemetery, located in Cartersville, Georgia.  The tour will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2014.  Over the past ten years, through costumed interpreters, tour participants have met a variety of people from Bartow’s past, including writers, teachers, politicians, preachers, mill workers, children, and soldiers.  In recognition of the 150^th anniversary of the American Civil War, we will feature stories of men and women who fought and lived during the 1860s, including soldiers, shop keepers, chaplains, and more.  In addition to learning more about Oak Hill Cemetery, participants will learn about the important role these people played in shaping Bartow County. 
 
This is a walking tour and will require walking on concrete, grass, and small inclines.  Please wear comfortable shoes.  The tour will last approximately 1 hour.  “An Evening in Oak Hill Cemetery” is sponsored by Parnick Jennings Funeral Home.
 
Ticket prices for this event are $15 for BHM members and $20 for not-yet members.  Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Bartow History Museum Gift Shop located at 4 East Church Street, in downtown Cartersville, or by calling 770-387-2774.  Tickets are on a first come first serve basis for tours beginning at 5:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.
