Bartow History Museum: Bartow County Civil War Bus Tour
“War at Every Door: Bartow County, 1864”
Bartow County Civil War Bus Tour
Have you ever wondered what happened to the civilians in Bartow County during the 1864 Atlanta Campaign? While there have been numerous books published about the battles of the Atlanta Campaign, less attention has been paid to the civilians who suffered at the hands of both Confederate and Union armies.
Join Bartow History Museum on Saturday, August 23 as Dr. Keith S. Hebert, Bartow County native and Assistant Professor of History at Auburn University, leads a guided bus tour of historic sites in Adairsville, Kingston, Cassville, Cartersville, and stops in between that tell the story of how Bartow County civilians endured many hardships during the Atlanta Campaign. Come hear stories of women such as Julia Barnsley and Susan Jett Howard who watched as retreating Confederates passed their homes leaving them vulnerable when the invading Yankees arrived soon thereafter. Also, come learn about the experiences of slaves such as Easter Brown and Sarah Jane Patterson who welcomed the Federal Army as liberators. Participants will learn about countless numbers of deserters, partisans, criminals, and bushwhackers who operated in the county preying upon soldiers and civilians alike. These stories as well as countless others come from extensive nationwide archival research that has yet to be shared with the public. Sign up now for this opportunity to see the Civil War in your community from a whole new perspective.
Tickets are $45 for BHM Members and $50 for non-members and are on sale now. Ticket price includes charter bus transportation, admission fees, lunch, snacks, and a special souvenir. Ticket holders are asked to meet at Bartow History Museum by 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 23. The bus will depart at 9 a.m. and return to the Museum around 3 p.m. Bus transportation is provided by Leisure Time. Space is limited. Stop by Bartow History Museum Gift Shop or call 770-387-2774 to purchase tickets.

Bartow History Museum: Margaret Mitchell and Gone with the Wind
Margaret Mitchell and Gone with the Wind
Bartow History Museum welcomes Connie Sutherland, director of the Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum, to the upcoming Evening Lecture on Thursday, August 28, 2014, at 7 p.m. Sutherland will discuss Margaret Mitchell, her novel
Gone with the Wind, and why we’re still talking about it 75 years later.
In 1936, Margaret Mitchell published her novel
Gone with the Wind, and three years later, on December 15, 1939, the movie version premiered at the Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta. Since that day, the movie has become a classic with a worldwide following. Mitchell was born in Atlanta in 1900 and grew up hearing stories of the American Civil War. She began writing the book in 1926, finishing it 10 years later. The book, set in Georgia during the Civil War and Reconstruction, won Mithchell the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1937.
The lecture will take place at the Bartow History Museum on Thursday, August 28, at 7 p.m. Following the presentation, an exhibit of
Gone with the Wind materials from the Bartow History Museum collection will be opened. This exhibit will include rare copies of the book, souvenirs given to the attendees of the Cartersville 1937 Junior-Senior Prom by Margaret Mitchell, and a set of lithographs of many of the characters from the movie, including Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler. This exhibit will be open through the end of 2014.
The Bartow History Museum is located at 4 E. Church Street in downtown Cartersville. For more information on this and other BHM programs, call 770-382-3818, ext. 6288 or visit our website at
www.bartowhistorymuseum.org.
