Art for Lunch: The Art and Life of Atlanta Artist Wilbur Kurtz: Inspired by Sout
David O'Connell's new book, 'The Art and Life of Atlanta Artist Wilbur Kurtz: Inspired by Southern History,' is the first biography ever devoted to the well-known Atlanta artist and amateur historian (1882-1967). For reasons of space, O'Connell has chosen to deal principally with Kurtz's artistic work, describing the stages of the artist's career from his founding of the Pen and Brush Club of Atlanta in 1913 and the first sales of his early works in that decade, to his death five decades later.

Duck Derby Kickoff
Advocates for Children Set to Host 13th Annual Duck Derby Festival
Cartersville, GA—The 2014 Duck Derby Festival Kick-off will be held at the City Cellar Loft on Thursday, April 3 at 5:00 p.m. This will offer the community a chance to sign up as a Sales Team, selling ducks to help Advocates reach their goal of 20,000 sold, and allow those involved to purchase Duck Derby merchandise, learn more about this year’s event and celebrate another year of feathers and fun!
The Kick-off will mark the beginning of this year’s Duck Calls and Overalls themed Derby on Saturday, May 17. Held, once again, at Riverside Park from 10:00-5:00 p.m., this year’s festival boasts arts and crafts vendors, live music, food and sweet treats, lots of FREE inflatables, carnival games and plenty of entertainment for your friends and family. Last year’s Duck Derby festival brought in the largest crowd yet and the community support Advocates has received will ensure another huge success.
This year’s first place prize is a 2014 Honda Fit, generously donated by Honda Carland North. Honda Carland North has continued to provide the grand prize for four years and creates enthusiasm and excitement from duck adopters at their chance to win a new car! It’s bright red this year, and more eye-catching than ever. And there are dozens of other prizes, too, so lots of people will be winners.
Patty Eagar, Advocates’ CEO, has been around since our very first Derby, and continues to be amazed. “It hasn’t gotten old. Every year there are new volunteers, new committee members, and new people who want to come down and see the racing of the ducks. Every year I get choked up seeing the swarm of ducks coming downstream, knowing that someone cared enough about child abuse prevention and treatment to want to adopt every single one of them!”
Ducks can be purchased online at www.AdvoChild.org and Duck Derby Sales Teams can sign up to sell ducks at the Kick-off, April 3. To learn more about the Duck Derby and Advocates for Children, please visit
www.AdvoChild.org or call 770.387.1143.

Bartow History Museum: New Permanent Exhibition Opening
New Permanent Exhibition Opening at Bartow History Museum
The Bartow History Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition in the permanent gallery on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. The new exhibit is on the life and legacy of Honorable Joe Frank Harris, Georgia’s 78th governor.
Born and raised in Bartow County, Harris worked in his family’s business after college and then began a distinguished political career, serving for 18 years in the Georgia House of Representatives and 8 years as governor. Due to the historic significance of Harris’ contributions at both the local and state level and the importance for future generations to know and understand the impact someone from their own community had, this new exhibit will highlight Harris and his family’s contribution to our history in a more significant way, as it will be incorporated into the Museum’s “Toward New Horizons” gallery, which looks back at some of the significant events and people over the past several decades.
The exhibit will feature objects, documents, and photographs covering Harris’ early life through his two terms as governor. The exhibit will also feature an interactive kiosk allowing visitors to access additional information and photographs covering a wide range of topics related to Harris’ life and career. This new exhibit was made possible by a generous gift from AFLAC Foundation, Inc.
The opening will take place on April 16, 2014, at noon, during our monthly Lunch & Learn program. Tom Lewis, who served as Harris’ Chief of Staff, and Joe Harris, Governor and Mrs. Harris’ son, will talk about their roles during the Harris administration before the exhibit opening.
The Bartow History Museum is located at 4 E. Church Street in downtown Cartersville. Parking is available next to the building. The lecture is free to members and included with the price of admission for not-yet members. For more information on this and other BHM programs, call 770-382-3818, ext. 6288 or visit our website at www.bartowhistorymuseum.org.

"Fore the Kids" Golf Tournament
Education Play Station will be hosting our 1st Annual Golf Tournament on Thursday April 24th! Bobby and Pam Cox are the tournament sponsors and will be present at the tournament! The tournament name is "Fore the Kids" because the funds raised will be for our kids. Our school was hit by the tornado last January. Our playground was devastated and as we move forward, we simply have no budget to make our playground what our kids need. Therefore, we are planning to run an Annual Golf Tournament to help cover initial and ongoing costs of providing a unique playground for our children. We look forward to your participation in our tournament as a sponsor and/or player to help our school!

Bartow History Museum: New Feature Exhibition Opening
New Feature Exhibition Opening at Bartow History Museum
The Bartow History Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a new feature exhibition on Thursday, April 24, 2014. The new exhibit, “The War Comes Home,” examines some of the many stories of battle, destruction, occupation, and more during 1864, when the Civil War marched through Bartow County.
The exhibit will feature objects and images of battle sites and home sites from across Bartow County where thousands of soldiers marched through and where local families experienced the devastation of war. The exhibit will also include a vignette recreating the interior of the Cartersville Depot where a skirmish took place in May 1864. Confederate troops stationed inside the depot knocked out gun ports through the brick walls and attempted to retain control of the depot.
The opening will take place on Thursday, April 24, 2014. A member’s preview and reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., local historian, David Archer, will present a program called “Places and Faces: Bartow County in the Civil War.” His presentation will include images and stories of some of the people involved on the home front and battlefront, as well as some of the Bartow County sites touched by the war in 1864.

Round the World Tales - AUDITIONS
Round the World Tales - Pumphouse Players Juniors AUDITIONS

Performances
June 20 & 21 at 7:00 PM and June 22 at 3:00 PM
In Round the World Tales by Steven Schutzman, join us for three tales about generosity and greed that also give us a glance into Swedish, Japanese, and Nicaraguan folklore. Through these plays, we show how greed throws people out of balance with their land and traditions, with each other and with themselves, and how generosity -the sense that one has gifts to share - can re-establish balance and connection between people and their world. This show is directed by Olivia Cantrell and the cast will be announced after auditions take place. Performance dates are June 20 & 21 at 7pm and June 22 at 3pm. For more information call the box office at (770) 387-2610. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased through our website at

Country Music Artist, Steve Wariner, to Perform at The Grand Theatre
7 North Wall Street - Cartersville, GA 30120
770-386-7343
Four-time Grammy Award winning country music artist, Steve Wariner, to perform at The Grand Theatre in downtown Cartersville as part of the Century Bank Entertainment Series.
This year’s Century Bank Entertainment Series at The Grand Theatre concludes when four time Grammy Award winner, Steve Wariner performs an acoustic show at The Grand on Saturday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m.
The combination of drive and talent that has made Steve Wariner a major country music figure showed up early. He started it all with an obsession with guitar, then grew into being a singer, songwriter, painter, producer, showman, and Opry member since 1996. As an artist, Steve has had 14 number one singles, three gold albums, 4 Grammy Awards with 11 nominations, 4 CMA Awards, 1 ACM Award, 16 BMI Country Awards, 15 BMI Million-Air Awards, among others.
As a songwriter he came up with hits for Bryan White, Clint Black, Garth Brooks, and others. Steve picked up Song of the Year honors from both the CMA and the ACM for “Holes in the Floor of Heaven,” the tune that would also win CMA Single of the Year honors. Other number one singles include “Some Fools Never Learn”, “Small Town Girl”, “Where Did I Go Wrong” and “Tips Of My Fingers”.
Jackson Lawrence will play a 30 minute acoustic set prior to Wariner taking the stage, Jackson may be young, but he is a veteran within the music industry, having shared the stage with numerous legendary and national acts such as Luke Bryan, Willie Nelson, Josh Thompson, Randy Houser and many others. As an artist and musician, Jackson has had the privilege of performing at some of the most prestigious venues in the industry such as; The Grand Ole Opry, Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Ryman Auditorium, among others. Having lived in North Georgia most of his life, he gained inspiration from his surroundings, and from the people he has encountered over the years. His style is laid back in nature but full of soul and passion. His musical proficiency and stage presence will leave an impression not soon to be forgotten.
Orchestra level tickets are $25 and balcony level seats are $20. This is a reserved seating event.
