On Monday, August 28th, the Bartow History Museum will host Sports Talk and “Tailgating” as part of the celebration of Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America, a traveling Smithsonian exhibition being displayed at the Bartow History Museum. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. the community is invited to join us for tailgating type refreshments inside the museum. At 7 p.m., Dr. Howard Hinesley, Superintendent of Cartersville City Schools, will share his unique collection of sports memorabilia and discuss the history of sports collecting. His collection includes many rare items acquired over years of collecting. See unique items such as signed baseballs from Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, and other collectibles. Also, we invite you to bring your special sports pieces to share. Afterwards, take time to see, Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America a traveling Smithsonian exhibition. The Bartow History Museum, in cooperation with Georgia Humanities Council, continues its exploration and celebration of sports in our heritage as it hosts this exhibition. “Hometown Teams” captures the stories that unfold on the neighborhood fields and courts, and the underdog heroics, larger-than-life legends, fierce rivalries and gut-wrenching defeats. For more than 100 years, sports have reflected the trials and triumphs of the American experience and helped shape the national character. Whether it is professional sports or those played on the collegiate or scholastic level, amateur sports or sports played by kids on the local playground, sports are everywhere in America.

“Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America” is part of Museum on Main Street, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), state humanities councils across the nation, and local host institutions.
