George Washington Carver Park Memories Day

February 24, 10 AM - 2 PM
George Washington Carver Park
3900 Bartow Carver Road, Acworth, GA 30121

Bring the family scrapbook and share your memories of George Washington Carver Park 1950-1975 – Georgia’s first state park for black Americans. New this year are many restorative park improvements and a series of interpretive signs on display. The African American Quilt Documentation Project will present their heirloom quilt findings to date and will reveal plans for upcoming artistic tributes. The AAQDP requests Memories Day guests to bring any heirloom quilts for documentation during the event. The details of your family quilt (its maker, history, photograph, etc.) will be recorded as part of the AAQDP and archived at the Bartow History Museum.

Guests will also be invited to add some stitches to a “Freedom Quilt” currently underway. The Memories Day Celebration will include representations of neighboring historic places along a developing Bartow County Black History Trail.  These include:
  • Noble Hill-Wheeler Memorial Center
  • Summer Hill Foundation
  • Euharlee Historical Society, Museum and Covered Bridge and Black Pioneers Cemetery
  • Kingston Woman’s History Club/ Melvinia Shields Gravesite
  • Adairsville Depot History Museum

In closing a Tribute to Bessie Atkinson (1925-2017) – Tree Planting Ceremony will be held to honor the park’s “First Lady”.  Refreshments will be provided.
