Margaret Mitchell and Gone with the Wind

Bartow History Museum welcomes Connie Sutherland, director of the Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum, to the upcoming Evening Lecture on Thursday, August 28, 2014, at 7 p.m.  Sutherland will discuss Margaret Mitchell, her novel Gone with the Wind, and why we’re still talking about it 75 years later.

In 1936, Margaret Mitchell published her novel Gone with the Wind, and three years later, on December 15, 1939, the movie version premiered at the Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta.  Since that day, the movie has become a classic with a worldwide following.  Mitchell was born in Atlanta in 1900 and grew up hearing stories of the American Civil War.  She began writing the book in 1926, finishing it 10 years later.  The book, set in Georgia during the Civil War and Reconstruction, won Mithchell the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1937.

The lecture will take place at the Bartow History Museum on Thursday, August 28, at 7 p.m.  Following the presentation, an exhibit of Gone with the Wind materials from the Bartow History Museum collection will be opened.  This exhibit will include rare copies of the book, souvenirs given to the attendees of the Cartersville 1937 Junior-Senior Prom by Margaret Mitchell, and a set of lithographs of many of the characters from the movie, including Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler.  This exhibit will be open through the end of 2014.
