Event Description:
Ghosts of Grandeur Lecture and Book Signing

Bartow History Museum and Etowah Valley Historical Society welcome Mike Kitchens for a special lecture and book signing on Thursday, June 26, 2014.

Kitchens will discuss his award winning book, Ghosts of Grandeur: Georgia’s Lost Antebellum Homes and Plantations.  Described as a “source for information on the South’s varied and imposing antebellum architecture, much of which has vanished from the landscape due to natural disasters, fires, human neglect and progress,” the book features 94 historic antebellum homes from across the state of Georgia, including several in Bartow County, which are no longer standing.

Through descriptions of the homes, of the families that lived in them, and over 200 photographs, the book chronicles the stories of these homes, details important architectural history, and encourages the preservation of those antebellum structures still around for future generations.

Kitchens’ love of history of the American South and photography began early in life, and he has spent years traveling across the South researching and photographing homes built prior to 1865.  What began as a hobby culminated into a desire to share his findings with others and the publication of Ghosts of Grandeur

The lecture will take place at the Bartow History Museum on Thursday, June 26, at 7 p.m.  Following the presentation, Mr. Kitchens will be available to answer questions and sign copies of his book.  Books will be available for purchase in the Museum Gift Shop.  The lecture is free to BHM and EVHS members and included with the price of admission for not-yet members.
