"The Civil War as a Launching Point for the Modern Embalming Industry"
September 29th at 7 p.m.

On September 29th at 7 p.m., former Bartow History Museum staff member, Elise Petersen, will discuss the increased necessity and use of the embalming process during the Civil War period. Find out how the perspective on death and loss changed during the war. Hear about the embalming industry’s pioneers and the rapid developments made in embalming between, 1861-1865. Lastly, only a small number of soldiers were embalmed. Learn who qualified for and received embalming services, and how embalmers knew who to treat after battle.

About Elise Petersen
Elise Petersen worked at Bartow History Museum as part of the educational staff and has previously spoken at the museum. She has a BA in History from Brigham Young University, with an emphasis on nineteenth-century America.
